General Information
The Art Gallery of Ruse was founded in 1933. From 1979 onwards the gallery is situated in the Exhibition Hall on 39 “Borisova” Str. There is ample space (covering an area of 2800 square meters) provided for standing exhibitions of painting, sculptures and graphic works from the gallery’s own collection, as well as for visiting exhibitions. Today there are 2 700 art works in the gallery fund. They illustrate the progress and the attainments of the Bulgarian pictorial arts from the end of the 19 century to the present day. Standing exhibitions in the Art Gallery of Ruse are: Founders of the gallery, Bulgarian painting from the 1920s and the 1930s, The Icon in the Past and Today”. During the period 1979-2006 many international art meetings took place at the Gallery. As a result a lot of foreign artists’ works were added to the fund. There are pictures and drawings by authors from Germany, China, Poland, Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, etc. We should also mention some of the graphic works by foreign artists - Liu Sen Shen, Robert Yanchovich, Sousoumou Endo. In the last years an average of 30 exhibitions per year are hosted by the Gallery. Among them there are exhibitions connected to the March Music Days Festival, which managed to break up with traditionalism and also some unconventional exhibitions like Music-Vision, Music in Material, etc. Apart from the Bulgarian exhibitions, the gallery hosts also international ones. Visiting exhibitions display a variety of trends in pictorial arts in the halls of the gallery. Some of them are organized with the support of foreign cultural establishments, embassies or galleries. In the years of its existence the Art Gallery of Ruse became a significant cultural institute in the town and the region and a place for storing the achievements of the modern plastic culture. The future plans of the Art Gallery include on the one hand improving the dialogue between different generations of artists, and integration of traditional events and unorthodox approaches on the other. The organization has a 7-members staff: a Director, 3 Curators, an Accountant, a Host, and a security guard. The available budgetary resources in a year amount to 39 810 EUR. The Art Gallery of Ruse is being financed by the Ministry of Culture, Ruse Municipality and participations in international projects. In the last years the Art Gallery of Ruse implements joint projects with contemporary Bulgarian and foreign artists from Serbia, Romania, Austria, Germany, Poland and France. Partners - The Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria, The Cultural Institutes of Italy, The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, The Union of Bulgarian Artists and other Bulgarian and foreign galleries and museums.
Mission and Objectives

The Art Gallery of Ruse participates actively in the present and future development of art and culture in Bulgaria. One of our main objectives is the preservation, conservation, safeguarding, research, exhibiting and popularization of visual art from the end on 19th century to the present. The exhibitions include classical painting, graphic arts and sculpture, as well as contemporary art in its unconventional forms, often combined with multimedia. Apart from exhibitions, a great diversity of cultural events take place in the Gallery, such as concerts, literary readings, film screenings and theater performances, which is indicative of the tendencies for interdisciplinarity and synthesis of different kinds of art.

Main Projects / Activities

One of the main activities of the Gallery is the presentation of Bulgarian and foreign art. In the recent years there has been a tendency for expansion of international cultural relations via organization of joint events. Some of the most successful initiatives were the visiting exhibitions from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania and Italy, and in 2013 – from Israel and Palestine. In 2012 - 2013 collective exhibitions of artists from Ruse were organized in Ukraine, Romania and Israel.

•  Widening the contacts with similar structures and cultural institutions, with the European Union countries, Balkan countries and international organizations.
The Gallery has three separate buildings that are being developed and accessible, suitable for the organization and carrying out of cultural events. Each of the buildings has an individual architectural shape as the separate premises create an atmosphere of spirituality, giving on the one hand a chance for the arrangement of different thematic expositions and on the other hand creating the necessary atmosphere for perception of the visitors. This is a result of the targeted policies developed by the Gallery as the visitors have increased from 4 704 people in 2008 to 11691 people in 2014. Out of them 3867 have been children. The events in the halls of the Gallery in 2008 have been 15 in number and in 2014-63 in number. The sensitive increase of the attendance is a result of the atmosphere of hospitality- a consequence of the many projects with the participation of children, young people, representatives of ethnic minorities and others, organized and carried out by the Gallery. Exhibitions and events with ethnic character for different ages, educational expositions and concerts have been presented.

Main Projects / Activities

Art Gallery “Dimitar Dobrovich” has limited resources in terms of the realization of many activities, having direct relation to the Gallery’s policy for its establishment as a cultural centre for young people, authors and community. The development and realization of different projects, performed by the Gallery, create real preconditions for improving the expert capacity of the team, the quality of work and realization of a series of cultural events and activities at the local, regional and national level. Last but not least the implementation of different projects gives the Gallery a chance to form itself as a loyal partner and a beneficiary, having a capacity and an established name among the cultural and financing organizations and institutions.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The Gallery has a site and a Facebook account with a sub-page of the Summer Art School. They are supplied daily with new information, photo materials, messages for upcoming events and coverage of already opened exhibitions. To ensure the wider coverage of events, organized in the Gallery, its team collaborates with local and national journalists via a press-list.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

The Gallery would like to participate in the creation of common projects with similar organizations, both to present Bulgarian arts to the international arena and host international arts in Bulgaria. We would like to participate in projects related to cultural exchange, work with partners to create international network of cultural exchange.

Image
Seeding the Peace

From 01st to 06th of August, Albania, Bulgaria, Belgium and the Netherlands were joined forces to create a safe space for teenagers and build an international community of young people interested in interreligious dialogue and cooperation. The reason was the youth camp in partnership between URI Europe, URI Global, Colorful Segroek CC, Udhetim I Lire CC, Bridges CC and Voem CC.

The aim of the project is to foster multicultural friendships between nearly 30 young people (aged 14-17) and to strengthen partnerships between the participants and their leaders from the 4 partner countries. All participants are from different religious traditions and cultures and come together to work together for peace and eco-justice.

,,Bridges” association is the initiator and creator of the form of interreligious camps for children, and for the first time it was held in 2016 in the city of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria and was realized with the support of the municipal administration, religious leaders from Stara Zagora and Kazanlak. Gradually, the idea is gaining more and more popularity and goes beyond Bulgaria, as for the first time it will be in such a wide partnership composition.

,,We chose the theme "Seeding the Peace" to focus on the understanding of peace and to give participants the opportunity to connect, share their experiences, learnings and visions to build a world of peace through creativity, dialogue and environmental justice. We want the camp to be a safe and secure place where we can put into practice the peace we imagine", says Angelina Vladikova, chairwoman of the "Bridges" association.

The camp was held in The Hague, Netherlands – the international city of peace and justice, from 1 to 6 August 2024 in a Catholic monastery in the city center just a few minutes from the Royal Palace. During the 5 days, participants were engaged in various educational activities, seminars and interactive games covering 5 thematic areas:

Day 1: Building friendships of trust

Day 2: Creating a culture for interfaith dialogue

Day 3: Environmental and Social Justice

Day 4: Understanding Peace Through Creativity and Art

Day 5: Joint Action, Peace in Action

Participants are selected based on their interest in interfaith dialogue, peace and environmental issues, and social justice, as well as their connections to the respective partnering organizations.

The entire program is entirely built by the team of youth leaders of the partner countries, with the help of the guidance of the URI Director of Youth and part of the URI Europe team. There is also a special session dedicated to art and the relationship between creativity, the topic of environmental protection and peace, which will be specially led by His Royal Highness Prince Boris of Saxe-Coburg.
