Juan F. Caraballo-Resto

Juan F. Caraballo-Resto is a cultural anthropologist. His primary research interest lies in the social anthropology of religions, and in particular the Muslim communities living in, and migrating throughout, the Middle East, Latin America and Western Europe.

Over the last years, this has involved a progression of ethnographic research projects focused on the role of human agency in the creation, transmission, appropriation, and development of contemporary Muslim ideas and practices, in contexts like Jordan, United Kingdom, Spain, Senegal and Puerto Rico.

At the theoretical level, his work has increasingly engaged different approaches to religious experience, 'fundamentalism' and secularism, interfaith relations, religious freedom, and questions of power, representation and discourse. He currently work as Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico, and has worked as a Research Associate at the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies in Jordan.
