Abstract

Sustainable development is the effort to meet today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The globalization of the sustainable development model dates back to the late 20th century. Sustainable development studies in Turkiye have been carried out by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) since 2007, taking into account global scales and within the framework of the criteria set by the European Union Statistical Office (Eurostat). The aim of this study is to make a descriptive analysis on the phenomenon of sustainable development in the Turkish economy from past to present. It was identified during the study that in Turkiye, after 2010, the mortality rate of children under the age of 5 decreased from 18 % to 9 % per 1000 live births, the proportion of women parliamentarians increased from 9 % to 17 % and the share of manufacturing industry added value in GDP increased from 15 % to 22 %. Whereas it was found that as of 2021, the unemployment rate was 12 %, while the country's economy grew by 11.4 %; life expectancy at birth is 76 years and women's labor force participation rate is 32.8 % and even though the share of R&D expenditures in GDP has increased, it is still below the level of developed countries. Moreover between 2016 and 2023, it’s observed that Turkiye's sustainable development goals index score increased by 4.7 points. As a result of the study, reasons for positive or negative changes in the indicators are investigated and suggestions for solving existing problems are included.
