Mission
MMS enables those disadvantaged and excluded and supports their integration back into society. We promote musical skills and other forms of individual expression and offer our target group the opportunity to develop further in musicality within a group. The participants in our projects tell their stories and life experiences by writing their own songs which are made available to a wider public.
Objectives
The MMS network organises music workshops with children, youngsters and immigrants as well as disabled people. Furthermore we engage in projects with apprentices and in the field of adult education. In the workshops our participants learn to write, compose, produce and present their own musical creations. The learning context may vary from intensive music camps to regular meetings over a longer period of time. At the end of the project the participants celebrate their accomplishments with their own CD, music video or performing for a larger audience. Our workshops not only focus on enhancing musical skills but help in developing social competences as well. According to the defined goals of our workshops, we encourage group works, intensify team building and foster the self-confidence of our participants through co-operations within the group.
A prime example of our impact at international level is our two-year music project “Have A Say“ which was realised in 2011 and 2012 in Hong Kong. The project was implemented in co-operation with the association “Spende Deine Zeit e.V.” and „Chungking Mansions Service Centre“. “Have A Say” brought together musicians, singers and artists from Hong Kong, the Bale region (Switzerland) and Freiburg (Germany). All participants got the opportunity to make their contribution to an intercultural CD production. The project’s main objective was to make the refugees’ voices in Hong Kong heard and to raise awareness for the precarious conditions of asylum seekers. By co-operation with local artists, refugees were able to gain and improve musical skills and to connect with society. The project, which was realised by volunteers from Hong Kong, Germany and Switzerland, was concluded with a professional CD recording, a music video and the release of the songs on iTunes. MMS accompanied the entire process starting with song writing, followed by production up to organization and distribution. Three of the refugees from Hong Kong were invited for an internship at a professional recording studio in 2014 – a success which can be attributed to “Have A Say”. And the project’s participants from Hong Kong still make music together, a fact which represents the sustainable and long-lasting impact of our work.
We have extensive and broad experience in the field of music projects with which we can make a valuable contribution to the Anna Lindh foundation. Our team can serve as an interface with other institutes and organisations while we can also actively contribute to the implementation of new projects. MMS team members come from various backgrounds and offer a great variety of professional skills which can help use synergies from all different areas. These areas can be divided into three main groups.
Organisation (Planning, project management, accounting, media and marketing expertise, project documentation)
Pedagogy (Accompanying and guiding project participants, drawing-up pedagogical structures and road-maps)
Music (Song writing, composing, mixing, teaching instruments, conducting, recording/production, technology, event technology)
The institution Anna Lindh Network can be a strong and valuable partner for realizing more projects like „Have A Say“. We aim for a first project in co-operation with the Atrium association as soon as October 2014. Atrium is already a member of the Anna Lindh Network. Atrium’s project in Tunisia is based on three pillars: empowering the blinds, general political education, and teaching intercultural competences. We thought about a co-operative music project enabling blind people to produce their world in sounds and present those worlds in public exhibitions.
