Santralistanbul is a project led by Istanbul Bilgi University(B?LG?), involving the conversion of the Ottoman Empire’s first power station - Silahtara?a Power Plant - into a Museum of Contemporary Arts, Museum of Energy and a cultural and educational centre.
With Santralistanbul, B?LG? has set out to simultaneously conserve and transform this industrial and technological heritage site of 118,000sqm into a creative cultural and artistic hub.
Santralistanbul sees its mission as being a comprehensive, participatory and interdisciplinary international platform for arts and culture.
The aim is to create international public arts, cultural and educational facilities, to attract the diverse and multifaceted artistic and cultural energies, ideas and work from regions such as the Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia and to network these artistic energies across the globe.
Santralistanbul will have a Museum of Contemporary Arts, a Museum of Energy housing the Silahtara?a power plant complex, an Artists-in-Residence program, a public library specializing in the fields of arts, humanities and architecture, documentation centers, research centers, an “Arts Street”, a design centre, artists workshops, a major shop specializing in artistic products, a multipurpose hall with high standards, two open air performance areas and a multipurpose tent.
B?LG? will bring in research and training capacity in arts, culture, design, urban regeneration, NGO training and in community and youth programs
